In October 2011, Dr. Skupin was part of a veterinary team that went to the Indian state
of Uttarakhand to do rural veterinary work and simple training. Almost 800 water
buffalo were treated, and dozens of small farmers received training in disease
prevention and livestock management.
In addition, a great deal of information was gathered which will enable future
veterinary teams to have an even greater impact on the quality of life in this region.
Many thanks to those who generously supported this effort financially, to Christian
Veterinary Mission for logistical support, to Future Vision India who hosted the team,
and to the wonderful Gujjar people for their hard work and willingness to listen.
Although it is a long way off, planning is already being done to return to the region in
October of 2012. A preliminary survey of the sheep and goat herds of the
neighboring Bhotiya people, who have also requested a veterinary team, is in the
pipeline as well.
